Clara Mohammed School was formally known as the University of Islam that closed its doors in 1976.
In 1984, three sisters along with other families from the community, reopened and renamed the school, Clara Mohammed School. The three courageous sisters were Sis. Umm Salaamah Abdullah, Sis. Zarifah Ghani and Sis. Lillie Mumin. This was in recognition of the wife of the Honorable Elijah Mohammed and the mother of Imam W.D. Mohammed. She was the first among our community in the early thirties that refused to send her children to public schools. When threaten with being taken to jail she didn’t back down, she held to her position.
Sis. Umm Salaamah, was the Director/Principal of the school for the years 1984-1989. Sis. Lillie Mumin was the Treasurer/Teacher from 1984-1988; Head Teacher for the Kindergarten-first grade and Principal for the years 1989-1992.
